Magnolia Legal Turned 1 – My Top 5 Takeaways from the First Year

One year ago, I took the leap and launched Magnolia Legal. Twelve months in, and what a ride it’s been! From thrilling wins to some “what was I thinking?” moments, it’s been a year of learning, growing, and, most importantly, staying caffeinated. Here are my top five takeaways from my first anniversary of running a law firm.

1. Planning is Key (a.k.a. Future Me Says Thanks!)

Months before launch, I was deep in preparation—writing articles, drafting business plans, making lists of dream clients, mapping out services, and setting my pricing. By the time I hit “go,” I wasn’t scrambling to create processes while juggling client work. Future me was VERY grateful.

2. Relationships Are Everything (Seriously, Everything!)

Without a doubt, relationships have been the biggest driver of work. Having specialized in my field for years, I was lucky to start with a solid network, but I’ve worked hard to build on that. These connections have not only sent work my way but also provided much-needed support, encouragement, and laughs when things got tough.

3. There’s No Harm in Asking (What’s the Worst That Can Happen?)

Want to work with someone? Ask. Promote yourself. Reach out. It can feel like throwing spaghetti at a wall, but guess what? Some of it sticks! I’ve landed amazing clients simply by putting myself out there. And yes, it’s nerve-wracking at first—but the payoff? Totally worth it.

4. Trust Your Gut (Or Regret It Later)

I’ve only had one bad client experience this year, but wow, was it a doozy. The second I picked up the phone, my gut whispered, “Don’t do it, Emma.” That whisper became a shout when I met the client and she casually mentioned she had just finished a ten-year prison stint for drug trafficking—but, of course, “she didn’t do it.” I ignored my instincts, took the case, and surprise! Didn’t get paid. Lesson learned: trust your gut. It’s rarely wrong.

5. Always Remember Why You Did It (Cue Happy Tears)

I started Magnolia Legal to work with clients I love, to provide top-notch support not just to franchisors but also to franchisees, and, most importantly, to put my family first. Law firm ownership is busy, but I frequently remind myself why I took this leap. I’m no longer the mum who misses school assemblies. That alone makes it all worthwhile.

What’s Next for Magnolia?

This year, we’re all about slow and steady growth—staying true to our purpose while continuing to deliver kickass franchise law services. The adventure continues, and I can’t wait to see what year two brings!
